How to prepare for work after NYSC
Your service year can become a credible first step in your career. Start preparing before your passing-out date so you can apply with clear evidence of your skills and experience.
1. Decide which roles you are targeting
Choose two or three related job titles instead of applying for every opening. Review the skills employers repeatedly request and identify the ones you can already demonstrate.
2. Turn your PPA work into evidence
Record the tasks, tools, projects and outcomes from your place of primary assignment. Write specific examples while the details are still fresh.
3. Complete your professional profile
- Add a clear headline and general location.
- List relevant skills that appear in your experience.
- Upload a current CV without financial or identity information.
- Check every date and qualification for accuracy.
4. Build useful proof
Where your experience is limited, include selected projects, coursework, volunteering or CDS work that proves a relevant skill. A small finished project is stronger than an unsupported claim.
5. Prepare for interviews
Practise explaining what you did, why it mattered, and what you learned. Research the employer and prepare questions about the role, reporting line, work location and expectations.
A legitimate opportunity should not require an application fee, interview fee, training deposit, BVN, bank PIN or one-time password. Report suspicious requests immediately.
6. Keep a simple weekly routine
- Review suitable roles several times each week.
- Tailor your summary and strongest evidence to the role.
- Track every application from your dashboard.
- Follow up professionally when the employer provides a safe channel.
