How to write a strong CV as an NYSC corps member
You do not need to hide your service year or inflate your experience. A good corps-member CV shows the work you actually performed, the problems you helped solve, and the skills an employer can use immediately.
1. Start with a clear professional headline
Use the role you are preparing for, followed by your strongest relevant skill or discipline. “Corps member” can provide context, but it should not be your entire professional identity.
Graduate Data Analyst · Excel, Power BI and Research · Currently serving with NYSC
2. Write a short, evidence-based summary
Use three or four sentences: your course of study, current service role, strongest relevant skills, and the type of opportunity you want. Avoid unsupported claims such as “hard-working” when you can demonstrate the work instead.
3. Treat your place of primary assignment as experience
List your PPA under experience when you performed real duties there. Use the organisation name, your working title, location, dates, and achievement-focused bullet points.
Turn duties into useful evidence
- Replace “helped with records” with the number or type of records you organised.
- Describe the tool you used: Excel, Canva, accounting software, lesson plans, CRM or another relevant system.
- State an outcome where possible: reduced delays, improved accuracy, supported more customers or completed a project.
Stronger: Organised and digitised more than 600 student records in Excel, making weekly reporting faster for the administrative team.
4. Include CDS and volunteer work when it proves a skill
Community Development Service can demonstrate planning, teamwork, leadership, public speaking, fundraising or project delivery. Keep it relevant and describe your personal contribution.
5. Put skills in context
A short, relevant skills section is stronger than a long list. Match it to the roles you are targeting, then support the most important skills in your experience or project bullets.
6. Keep education and NYSC dates accurate
State your qualification, institution and graduation year. You may list your expected service completion month and year. Never claim that service is complete before it is.
7. Keep the CV easy to scan
- Use one or two pages.
- Use ordinary section headings such as Summary, Experience, Education and Skills.
- Avoid decorative graphics that make the text difficult to read.
- Check spelling, dates and tense before uploading.
Do not place your BVN, NIN, bank information or unnecessary home-address details on a CV. On newjob.ng, contact details are protected from employers until the platform’s approved sharing step.
